Smartphone sales stagnated in Q4 2016 in Romania

Q4 2016 was not a good period for the sales of mobile phones, smartphones, headsets and other accessories related to mobile communications. According to a study conducted by GfK in Romania, sales in Q4 2016 reached 273 million euros in our country, only 0.2% higher than in Q4 2015.

The figure is anyway impressive for a country like ours and suggests the fact that Romanians massively buy mobile communication equipment. In the same context, the entire electro-IT market in Romania grew by 2.5% compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 904 million euros in Q4 2016.

It is interesting that the interest of Romanians vis-à-vis mobile communication equipment is in a continuous decrease in the last 5 fiscal quarters in Romania. From a 33% increase recorded in Q4 2015 compared to Q4 2014, it has now reached an increase of only 0.2% in Q4 2016 compared to Q4 2015, a sign that the Romanian market is approaching saturation.

Regarding the breakdown of sales, we are talking about an increase in sales of phablets, but also of headsets with microphones. Apart from these product categories, the percentage increases were lower than 2 digits for the rest of the categories, in the case of some of them decreasing, and this is why this general increase is so small for our country.

"Sales of communication equipment (simple mobile phones, smartphones, headphones and other accessories) recorded in the last quarter of last year totaled only 273 million euros, respectively an advance of only 0,2% compared to the previous year."
