Google announces the expected change for GMail

Google promises to stop scanning GMail users' emails to show them personalized ads when they use the service.

Google announced yesterday that it will change the way the GMail platform works, making a change that many people have been waiting for for some time. After a lot of criticism regarding the way Google treats the privacy of its customers, it seems that there will be a radical change of strategy for the way GMail works.

According to some information announced today by those from Google, the practice of scanning the emails of GMail users is going to stop. Those at GMail introduced this practice to be able to customize the GMail experience according to users' needs, but it seems that they decided to give up the idea, especially since it was not really that legal in many countries.

GMail ads they will not disappear following this change, but there will be changes to the way they are displayed by the Google company. Google will still display ads in GMail based on our preferences, but it will no longer scan incoming emails to display the right ads from advertisers using the company's Adword platform.

Google claims that it will use other information, separate from that in emails, to personalize the ads displayed in GMail, the change being part of a far-reaching one implemented for all Google services. The change of decision by those from Google regarding the scanning of GMail emails is also based on a recent court decision that defined the practice as illegal.

"Consumer Gmail content will not be used or scanned for any ads personalization after this change. This decision brings Gmail ads in line with how we personalize ads for other Google products. Ads shown are based on users' settings. Users can change those settings at any time, including disabling ads personalization. G Suite will continue to be ad free."

Having said that, from now on Google will completely stop scanning GMail emails, but will continue to personalize ads based on other information collected about us.
