Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), decided to talk the other day about the dispute he has with Imagination Technologies, the company that for years has been producing the video cards used in iPhone and iPad. Thanks to these products, iPhone and iPad have remained for over 7 years in the top of the best performing mobile terminals when it comes to graphic processing power.
Apple stated the other day that it had announced to its partner company since 2015 that it was going to end the contractual relations with it and not from April 2016, as it has now stated. Apple claims that since 2015 it no longer uses new technologies from Imagination Technologies, and that on February 9 the company announced that it will reduce the number of licenses purchased for its technologies.
Apple pays 30 cents to Imagination technologies for every iDevice sold, but the amount will drop to just 10 cents before license payments are stopped. Apple also stated that in recent years it has used fewer and fewer technologies of Imagination Technologies and that it will completely give up on them in a maximum of 2 years because it wants to use its own technologies.
Apple confirmed today that Imagination Technologies knew for almost 2 years that it was going to be without it as a client, and the British should have announced this publicly, being obliged by law. Because they didn't do it, Imagination Technologies risks being investigated by the authorities because they misled their investors, who didn't know that this company was going to be without its main customer.
"We began working with Imagination in 2007 and stopped accepting new IP from them in 2015. After lengthy discussions we advised them on February 9 that we expected to wind down our licensing agreement since we need unique and differentiating IP for our products. We're disappointed in their response, which has been inaccurate and misleading."
As for the evolution of video cards for iPhone and iPad, Apple certainly has very good products ready and will use them to ensure very good performance for future iPhones and iPads.
