Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are faster than car infotainment systems, according to a study done by the American authorities during the last months. According to them, the software created by Apple and Google allows much faster control of functions similar to those implemented in car infotainment systems.

More precisely, dialing is 5 seconds (24%) faster in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compared to an infotainment system, and creating a guided navigation route is 15 seconds (31%) faster. The difference is huge, and for drivers this means a shorter time spent in traffic, or a shorter period of time in which they take their eyes off the road.

The American authorities praise the software created by Apple and Google for the cars sold all over the world, but of course only certain models offer something like that. There are also manufacturers, such as BMW, who ask for money to use these systems, so not everyone has free access to them, although they are far superior to the infotainment systems in cars.

"Google and Apple are proving that it is possible to reduce the level of demand in-vehicle infotainment technology places on drivers. While improvements are necessary before any of the systems can be considered safe to use while driving, this research shows that smartphone-based software has the potential to offer a simpler, more familiar design that is less confusing to drivers, and therefore less demanding."

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were thought of as a first step for Apple and Google to offer their own operating systems for the smart cars of the future. In its current form, this software is still rudimentary, but both companies are working on major improvements that will bring many useful functions for users.
