Apple wants to buy Intel's modem division for $1 billion

Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), is in advanced negotiations to buy the modem division of a Intel with the amount of 1 billion dollars, which would greatly help the launch of future iPhone models. The discussions between the two companies are so advanced that the agreement could be officially announced during the next week, so Intel has been looking for some time to sell that division.

Intel has announced since April that it wants to sell its division that produces 5G modems, and now it seems that it has reached an agreement with Apple for it. The two companies have collaborated very closely in recent years, Apple buying modems from Intel, but because they were inferior to Qualcomm, and do not have 4G, it decided to return to its old partner.

Intel abandoned the 5G projects after Apple and Qualcomm reconciled, but those from Cupertino want the division and the engineers who worked on them. Apple wants to make its own modems for the iPhone and iPad, and is willing to invest 1 billion dollars to have total control over the GSM functionality of its products.

“Apple is in advanced negotiations to buy Intel's modem chip division. A deal worth $1 billion or more, covering a patent portfolio and the division's engineers, could be completed within the next week, the sources said -- assuming talks don't fall apart."
