WhatsApp is a platform with 2 billion users, most of them having an account either in Facebook or Instagram, and those from Facebook will use several methods to identify them in all platforms, including by phone number. Computer security experts are not so enthusiastic about the prospect of WhatsApp having users identified in this way by Facebook, but on the other hand, they can't really do anything.
