The European Parliament will present on April 7 a new legislation for the "right to repair", a very old problem that costs a lot to consumers all over the world, and which brings huge profits to the big manufacturers of electronic devices.
The European Parliament will propose a law that should allow people to repair their electronic devices more easily, that would promote products that have a longer lifespan, and that could also bring us longer warranty periods for products .
"Why is the EU legislation on the "right to repair" important?
On April 7, the Parliament will present its priorities regarding the right to repair, meeting a legislative proposal of the European Commission. The right to repair is considered a key milestone for the EU's plan to achieve the circular economy by 2050 under the European Green Deal.
Four important reasons for "right to repair" legislation:
- 77% of EU consumers would rather repair their goods than buy new ones
- certain products are designed to break down after a certain period of time or use.
- repairing electronic equipment can lead to reduced resource consumption
- in 2017, more than 3,5 million tons of e-waste were collected and only 40% recycled."
