Sony presents a function of the iPhone 8 for the first time

Sony will present a 3D facial recognition system, which was also rumored to be implemented in the iPhone 8 later this year.

Sony, one of the largest manufacturers of mobile phones and components for them, is going to present an extremely interesting function in the near future. More precisely, we are talking about a function for 3D facial recognition of users, many rumors saying that such a function is also going to arrive in iPhone 8 starting this year.

2D facial recognition has been part of Android for some time, but Sony says it's not good enough, so they want to launch a 3D system. The presentation of this new 3D facial recognition system will be made these days by Sony at the Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2017, it will be superior to the useless one in the Samsung Galaxy S8.

3D scanning of people's faces is already used in applications with augmented reality, but those from Sony are convinced that they can use the system including for biometric security. Sony entered into a partnership with a Swiss company called KeyLemon, which specializes in biometric security systems using 3D facial recognition, instead of 2D.

The great advantage of 3D facial recognition systems lies in the fact that they cannot be fooled with a simple picture, as is the case with 2D ones, as we already know, and Sony wants to take advantage of this. Rumors regarding the iPhone 8 told us that Apple will implement a facial recognition system clearly superior to those on the market, and the 3D one that will be presented by Sony could be this technology.

It is speculated that facial recognition could replace Touch ID in the iPhone 8, and rumors that Apple would not implement such technology have not disappeared, Sony being able to be its partner. We already know that Apple buys from Sony almost all the cameras it uses in the iPhone or iPad, so the use of a 3D facial recognition system based on Sony's image sensors is not hard to believe.

Until then, it remains to be seen what kind of presentation Sony will make at MWC 2017 in Shanghai and if the 3D facial recognition system is as good as the company claims. If this is true, then of course there are many chances that it will be implemented in iPhone 8, or Sony would work with Apple for implementation in future products.
