iOS 12 will be released this evening, most likely at 20:00 by the Apple company, but probably some of you are asking how you should prepare for the installation of the new version of the operating system. iOS 12 is offered by Apple for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch starting today, the update being an extremely important one, so it's good to prepare yourself properly for the news that will be offered.
iOS 12 is compatible now with an even greater number of iDevices compared to iOS 11, those from Apple having this year 26 models compatible with the new version of its operating system. iOS 12 is a major update, those from Apple announcing very big improvements for performance, including battery autonomy, so the user experience is going to be much better than in the past, at least theoretically.
Backup, backup, backup, with iCloud or iTunes
iOS 12 must NOT be installed in the iPhone or iPad, without first making a backup using iCloud or iTunes, to be sure that you do not lose data in case of problems. In the past there have been various issues with iOS updates that locked up the iPhone or iPad during installation and required a restore to complete the process, so a backup can save you a lot of headaches.
iOS 12 can be installed without problems if you first make a backup via iCloud from Settings > Apple ID (name of Apple ID) > iCloud > Backup, Settings Apple ID (name of Apple ID) > iCloud > Backup. There you also have options for what you want to be saved in that backup, you can choose what you are interested in saving, so you will also know what you will be able to find in the phones in case you have to use the backup if the installation procedure of iOS 12 fails.
To install iOS 12, you can back up the data from your phones and through iTunes, but first you have to connect your iPhone or iPad to the computer. After that, click on the icon of your iDevice in the upper part of iTunes, and in the central menu you will have the option to make a local backup in the computer, or directly in iCloud, any of the options being good if you encounter problems when installing iOS 12.
iOS 12 could force you to delete all data from your iPhone or iPad, so apart from the backup, I recommend you to save your photos and videos on a computer, because if you don't use iCloud Photo Library, then they they will be deleted in case of restoration.
Free up space on your iPhone or iPad
iOS 12 will require up to 2-3 GB of free space for installation on iPhone and iPad, so make sure you have it on your iDevices. On the iPhone X, iOS 12 required a minimum of 2 GB of space to install, but for other iPhone models, especially those with smaller screens, the amount of space required for installation will be less, but I can't say exactly how many hundreds of MB.
iOS 12 for iPad Pro 12.9 inch might need 3 GB of space, or even more, to install, so it's good to have it available. If you do not have free space available on your iPhone or iPad, then the installation of iOS 12 will not take place, as the operating system may recommend the temporary deletion of some applications to perform the installation, they are automatically installed after the process is completed.
A good internet connection
Installing iOS 12 will require downloading a large file, at least 1 GB for your iPhone or iPad, so make sure you have a good internet connection. Whether we're talking about Wi-Fi or LAN, that is, if you're updating via iPhone and iPad, or computer, make sure you have enough bandwidth to download the update to iOS 12.
Minimum 50% battery, or a power source
iOS 12 will not be installed if you don't have at least 50% of the available battery on your iPhone or iPad, the Apple company implementing this restriction so that the process is not interrupted due to lack of energy and the products remain blocked. If you have a low battery, but a power source at hand, you can connect your iPhone or iPad to a charger, and the installation of iOS 12 will begin without problems.
Patience, patience and more patience
iOS 12 is awaited by extremely many iPhone or iPad users, and everyone will rush to install it as soon as the update appears. In this idea, it is possible that iOS 12 is very difficult to download from Apple's servers, so you have to be patient, the installation itself can take up to 15 minutes depending on the type of iDevice you have.
