For the last few days, Chronic Dev Team has been working on iOS 4.3 instead of developing the untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 4.2.1, but they promise us great things for greenpois0n RC5. This new version of greenpois0n should make untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1, but the way the team works it could take another 2 weeks before we have a functional program available to the general public. The past few days the Dev Team and the Chronic Dev Team analyzed the implementation of ASLR in iOS 4.3, but the Dev Team found time to to work and to the Windows version of redsn0w 0.9.7 which will make untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 without using any SHSH.
It is hard to say which of the 2 jailbreak solutions will be released first, but as the situation is, I would say that we have more chances to see something from the Dev Team than from the others. We take geohot out of the equation, I don't see why he would get involved in the development of a jailbreak solution for iOS 4.2.1.
