In collaboration with the Romanian Police, during this week, he carried out no less than 27 searches in Bucharest, and in 9 other counties in the country, in a case of fraud with Bitcoin and Ripple cryptocurrencies. Although the Secret Service is mainly known for the fact that it protects the US president, the agents also deal with fraudulent bankruptcy and other economic crimes, and Bitcoin and Ripple have fallen under their jurisdiction this time.

Almost 100 policemen from Romania collaborated with the secret service agents from the USA in this operation, and of course several dozen people were arrested and their cryptocurrencies were confiscated. It seems that the investigated persons would have deceived several American citizens using fraudulent websites, the total damage being approximately 34 million dollars, but only 5000 dollars worth of coins were made unavailable during the operation in Romania.

The Secret Service and the Romanian Police collaborate to stop Bitcoin and Ripple fraud

Although the confiscation of cryptocurrencies was done in a small amount, the police together with the American agents still confiscated 51 mobile phones, 8 HDDs, 40 USB sticks, 32 laptops, 12 tablets, and 5 computers. Apart from that, the Secret Service and the Romanian Police also confiscated 86 DVDs, 11 bank cards, another 3 memory cards, 2 cars worth 61.000 euros, 207.600 LEI, 24.500 euros, 5000 dollars and 5500 of Swiss fans, much less than the damage of 34 million dollars.

Following a request for international legal assistance, sent by the Secret Service (United States of America), the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, under the coordination of DIICOT, carried out investigations regarding a group of Romanians involved in various forms of computer fraud and money laundering. The victims were American citizens, and the damage caused amounts to approximately $34.000.000. Research has shown that the criminal activity of the people involved would have started in 2016.

Secret Service. However, the police seized 7 plots of land and 2 apartments with a total value of 310.000 euros, no less than 14 Romanians were arrested, and it seems that they would also be extradited. Even so, the operation of the Secret Service together with the Romanian Police, coordinated by DIICOT, is a first for our country, in terms of cryptocurrencies, and it is possible that it is only the beginning, because the authorities have begun to pay attention to this type of coins.
