Emergency service 112 is going to take part in an extremely important change in the coming months, the minister of the MAI, Mihai Fifor, making the announcement last evening for all Romanians. More precisely, the Romanian Government wants to take over the administration of the National Single System for Emergency Calls (SNUAU) from STS, so that all the infrastructure behind 112 will be transferred to the MAI, where it will most likely be under the leadership of Raed Arafat.

STS administers the 112 emergency service from the moment of its creation until now, but the scandal following the crimes in Caracal seems to have put an end to this way of doing things, so a very big change is ready. The transfer of 112 to the MAI could be auspicious, because until now Raed Arafat has shown that he is able to properly organize the emergency services, if he is allowed to do so.

Raed Arafat announced yesterday that he is also waiting for estimates regarding the costs of implementing AML technology in the 112 service, and it is possible that the MAI will deal with this instead of those from STS. In order for the 112 service to be placed under the MAI, an emergency ordinance of the Government will be needed, so it is possible that the change will be made this month, but its impact will not be felt that quickly.

"That's right, that's what we want to do (the 112 system to go from STS to MAI, ed.). We are in the phase where we are preparing the procedure and, if necessary, legislative changes, so that we can move on to this immediately."

The transfer of 112 to MAI from STS will leave the institution without a very large part of the activity it is carrying out at the moment, because there are many centers and many employees in its administration. It is hard to say if the change of the administrator of the 112 service is auspicious, but STS has been accused many times of not managing the system properly, so some Romanians could look at everything with good eyes.

It will be interesting to see how long these changes last, and what exactly will be implemented to make the 112 service better, considering that in the case of the Caracal crimes, it completely failed.
