Valeriu Gheorghita: The Alarming Problem in the 4th Wave in Romania

Valeriu Gheorghita is talking today about the alarming increase in the number of new cases of Coronavirus in Romania in the 4th wave, but not only about this because it comes "together" with another extremely serious problem, an increase in the number of serious cases from intensive therapy.

Valeriu Gheorghita says that the situation at the moment in Romania is an extremely serious one, and this in the conditions where we are talking about the highest numbers of infections of the whole year, the Delta variant generating extremely serious problems in the country.

"There is an alarming increase in the number of serious cases that end up in intensive care. At the moment, from the data that I have available, about two-thirds of the intensive care places that are provided for in the resilience plan are already occupied.

I think that at this time this steep increase can be explained at least in part by the fact that the majority of diagnosed patients stay at home, are not medically supervised, do not declare the diagnosis and self-medicate or are treated without very good medical supervision and , in this situation, they arrive at the hospital with serious conditions, they are admitted directly to the intensive care units.

There are probably other situations in which patients self-diagnose through self-testing at home and remain in isolation, and in situations where the evolution is obviously unfavorable, they turn to medical services. What we know from the literature and published data is that infection with the Delta variant increases the risk of hospitalization by at least twofold. But there is still no agreed concept on a more aggressive Delta variant.

What we do know, instead, is that it infects a significantly larger number of people, and then by applying the same percentage of severe forms to a larger number of people, we will have, in absolute terms, a larger number of cases that need care in intensive care units. We can control this situation by vaccination."
